BGC to stay in Division 1

The Brisbane Golf Club has recorded its second home win of the season against Nudgee Golf Club 17-4 and with that result has secured its place in Division 1 for 2018.

The bottom team in the four team competition is relegated to Division 2 and with BGC on 5 points it will be a battle between Nudgee Golf Club (3) and Oxley Golf Club (0) to see who remains in Division 1.

With two rounds remaining including an away match against Oxley Golf Club (August 13) and a home match against Keperra Golf Club (August 27) there is still a chance for BGC to win the Pennant with two more victories, however, we would also need Nudgee Golf Club to upset or draw with Keperra Golf Club away next week.

The Brisbane Golf Club over the past three years has been promoted from Division 3 into Division 1 and it’s a wonderful achievement to be staying up in the premier grade of BDGA Pennants.

BGC were comprehensive winners in all three grades against Nudgee Golf Club and the 13-point differential was a great reward for the quality golf that was on display from the home club.

The form of our Opens has been outstanding at home over the past two weeks giving up only 5.5 points across 22 matches and reversing the away result against Nudgee Golf Club with interest. There were a number of highlights in their performance including our top four Lawry Flynn (1up), Stephen Cox (6&4), Kurt Carlson (1up) and Tim Lukin (1up) all producing quality wins; Ilija Soldan (1up) winning on debut; Jacob Clarke (3&2) securing his second win in a row; Jordan Lett (3&2) and Simon Dougan-Jones scoring their first points of the season and again a ‘never say die’ victory from our Number 11 in the Opens, Scott Bretheron (2up).

Our Opens are still a mathematical chance of securing their Pennant and with a full strength team available this week for selection are well placed to do so.

Our Masters produced 4.5 points and most likely secured the Pennant in the Masters for the fourth consecutive year. The team lead by Gary Brodie at Number 1 were always going to be tough to beat at home but their dominance was inspirational. Stephen Deane remained undefeated this season winning 4&2, Gary Brodie won 7&5, Warwick Oxenford won 5&4 and Nick Woodley won 4&3. Brett Kinninmont fought a tight contest all day and finished his match all square.

The Juniors keep improving each week and their 4-1 win was one of the most impressive of the season to date. Nudgee Golf Club had assembled a very strong junior team for the match but it was our boys experience and pride at home, which saw them claim the win. Sam Slater (1up), Ben Steiler (6&4), Dylan Barraclough (5&4) and Jordan Hampson (2&1) all won whilst Bailey Ittensohn, who went into the match undefeated this year, came up against a ‘red-hot’ golfer in Frank Pavek from Sanctuary Cove and went down 6&5.

In the race for the Pennants our Juniors are on 6 points just one win behind Keperra Golf Club on 8 points. If the Juniors can win their last two matches they will be a chance of winning their grade, possibly on the number of games won.

It was wonderful to again see so many Members out supporting the team on another glorious Winter’s day which is greatly appreciated by the entire squad. A big thank you also to our caddies and our support staff including Doug Lukin, Phil Fraser, Renitta Flynn, Joe Janison and Bruce Nicol.

The Brisbane Golf Club is away this week against Oxley Golf Club on Sunday, 13 August 2017. After four rounds Oxley Golf Club are yet to win a match in 2017 but their rich history in Division 1 suggests they will fighting hard to the end and another tough match is expected for BGC.
