2021 Club Championships

Just a few items to let everyone know what is going on over the next few weeks regarding this year’s Club Championships.

Both the Mens and Women’s Club Championships will be played over 2 qualifying rounds of stroke with the top 8 for each grade/category going into the matchplay portion.

The women this year will have both qualifying rounds played over various days to allow all women members to qualify without having to take leave from work, school or other mid week commitments, thus strengthening the number of entrants. Round 1 will be played on either Saturday, 29 May 2021 or Tuesday. 1 June 2021, with Round 2 on either Thursday, 3 June 2021 or Saturday, 5 June 2021.

Due to the success of our junior program successfully run and managed by Joe Janison and Asha Hargreaves, we will be running a Junior Girl’s Club Championship this year. You might have noticed that our Junior Girl’s Club Championships qualifying round has already been played. The top 4 nett scores played in the qualifying round on Sunday, 23 May 2021 and will go into the semi final, to be played along with all the other semi final matches played over the various grades and categories.  A massive thanks to Joe and Asha for all the work you have done over the past couple of years to get our junior program into this position. The health of a Club, in my opinion, is the junior and younger members, and to see so many young golfers around the Club on a regular basis bodes well to a very good future. We now have over 100 junior members at BGC.

For the men, The Hunter Family Medal will be awarded to the person with the best gross score over the 2 qualifying rounds. The A.H. Colledge Trophy will be awarded to the person with the best nett score over the 2 qualifying rounds. All grades are eligible to win either event.

Once all 8 qualifiers are known for the various grades and categories, all the matchplay events will be played together.  All quarterfinal matches will be played on Sunday, 13 June 2021, the semi finals on Sunday, 20 June 2021 with all the Club Championship finals to be played on Sunday, 27 June 2021.

Categories

There will be a handout in the proshop when you check in to confirm which grade or category you might be eligible for. If you are lucky enough to qualify for more than 1 category (e.g. senior, veteran, grade), please let the proshop know as soon as possible the event you wish to compete in.

Scoring

Please note that we will using manual scorecards for Round 1, as you need to tick the box (yes or no) if you plan to qualify for the various categories or not.  Round 2 can be scored with the mi-score app if you wish.

Course Routing

The two qualifying rounds will be played over the same course, weather permitting. We have had to work around the irrigation project underway so the layout will be as follows:

Front 9

1, 19, 20, 21, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9

Back 9

10, 11, ,12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18.

When you have finished No. 1, it would be preferred that you make your way up to the 19th tee via the north western side of 19 i.e. the 10th hole side of 19, after checking that there is no one hitting off the 18th tee and the 19th tee.  Please respect anyone putting out on the 19th as you go past.

Matchplay

The matchplay portion of the Club Championships will be played on the course that is available pending the progression on the irrigation project. This will be determined closer to the dates. Just giving you a heads up, the 3 rounds of the matchplay will be unlikely to be played on the same layout.  We will keep everyone informed as we go.

The Men’s Club Championships will be over 36 holes for the quarter finals, semi finals and final.  The Womens club championships will be over 18 holes for the quarter finals and semifinals, with the final to be played over 36 holes.

All other matchplay matches will be over 18 holes.

Any ties at the end of the scheduled duration will continue in sudden death starting from the first hole you played, and continue until a winner is determined.

There will be a starter for all the matchplay matches explaining anything if necessary.

Nett matchplay events

If you are competing in any of the matchplay events that are a handicap event, please note your GA handicap on the qualifying round will be used thoughout the matchplay portion.  Your GA handicap as of Monday, 10 May 2021 determined in which grade you were eligible to compete.

Pace of Play

Due to the full fields throughout the qualifying rounds, please be aware of your position in the field. Pace of play will be monitored as per usual because I have nothing else to do.
