BGC stay in Division 1

The Brisbane Golf Club will remain in BDGA Division 1 Pennants for a fourth consecutive year in 2020.

Our spot in the premier grade was secured during the last round of the season with a dominant 15-6 win over Royal Queensland Golf Club at home.

BGC won back to back Division 1 titles in 2017 and 2018 and were undefeated last year as well. In 2019, two wins and a draw at home were not enough to win again but enough to remain a Division 1 golf club.

Both BGC and RQ knew what was in play yesterday and the atmosphere prior to the first tee time reinforced how much both teams wanted to win. For BGC the home advantage proved the difference, particularly in the Opens who secured a valuable 9 out of a possible 11 points. This was one of the biggest wins of the year in Division 1 by any team. Our lower order of Tom Deane (5&4), Lewis Clelland (1up), Sam Howse (7&6) and Zack Halpin (1up) ensured the day started perfectly each securing wins. Other winners included Ben Stieler (2up), Illija Soldan (5&4), Sam Slater (3&2) and Lawry Flynn (5&3) while Kurt Carlson and Wade Edwards halved their matches.

In the Masters there were a number of interesting match ups with the most notable between Stephen Deane and Warwick Oxenford, who is a Member of both Clubs but played for RQ this year. This match had a number of highlights but none better than the 20-foot birdie putt made by Stephen on the penultimate hole to secure the win (2&1). Both Ash Sturmer (2&1) and Phil Melksham (2&1) also produced wins.

Our Juniors this year were led by Jordan Hampson who was representing the Club for his third year in a row. Playing at one is never easy and his 3-2 winning record for the year showed his class. The Juniors won 3 matches against RQ to give BGC wins across all three grades on the day. The winners were Jordan Hampson (1up), Bailey Ittensohn (5&3) and Matthew Van Eden (7&6).

Redcliffe Golf Club defeated Keperra Golf Club in Round 6 to win the Division 1 title for the first time in its current format. Redcliffe only lost once during the season and are to be congratulated for their wonderful season.

RQ will go back to Division 2 next year where they will join Indooroopilly, Nudgee and Oxley Golf Clubs. Pacific Golf Club will replace RQ in Division 1.

BGC would like to thank not only the players for their wonderful efforts but also the managers, caddies and Members who travelled home and away to support our team.
