H. W. Herbert Junior Club Championships

The two qualifying rounds have been played to determine the eight leading players. An 18-hole scratch knockout match play commences with the Quarter Finals on Sunday, 1 September; the Semi Finals on Sunday, 8 September and the Final on Sunday, 15 September.

BGC Member, Sam Slater has won the H. W. Herbert Junior Club Championship for the third time in a row.

The +2 handicapper defeated his Pennants’ teammate, Campbell Kerr 3&2 in the final on Sunday. His opponent at just 13 years of age performed extremely well and is also to be congratulated.

As the leading qualifier Slater enjoyed a bye in the quarter finals and defeated Matthew Van Eden 3&2 in the semi-finals.

This will be his last opportunity to play in the Juniors but it’s extremely unlikely it will be his last finals appearance in a Club Championship. In June this year Slater only just lost the final of the Men’s Club Championship 3&2 against Conor Whitelock over 36 holes and the two are again expected to feature in 2020.

Slater has enjoyed a wonderful year and his continued development under the guidance of his coach Lee Eagleton has impressed all.

One of many highlights for Slater this year was representing Queensland at the Australian Boys’ Interstate where he secured 4 points out of a possible 6 including three wins. He also finished second in the NSW Boys Championship in July.

Only Tony Di Tommaso has won more Junior Club Championships than Slater having won his first three from 1977 to 1979 and his fourth in 1982.

One of the most recent multiple winners of the Junior Club Championship is Maverick Antcliff who is currently leading the order of merit on the China Tour.
