Welcome to the last edition of News from the Red Tees for 2017. Our golfing season concluded on Fun Day, which saw us playing the course in ways never seen before, and our traditional Christmas Lunch with all the trimmings wrapped up what has been another great year for the ladies at the Brisbane Golf Club. The 9-hole summer competition is available over December and January until we reconvene for our Opening Days in early February. Until then, we wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Nine & Wine – Friday, 17 November
As a wrap up for the 2017 Ladies, Let’s Golf program, 21 new-to-golf ladies were partnered by our wonderful LLG volunteer escorts for an enjoyable 9-hole Ambrose followed by a glass of wine and cheese and dips platters on the Terrace. Winners were Ann Fell and Jenny Whelan.
“Fun Day” – Thursday, 23 November

Midweek Christmas Celebrations, Tuesday, 9 November
A casual 9-holes of golf for some ahead of a traditional Christmas lunch in the Tennyson Room, enjoyed by 120 of our ladies. Our end of season celebrations is always a highlight of our golfing year, and this year was no exception. The room looked particularly festive, thanks to Jenny and her helpers, and the Christmas quiz was a lot of fun, with the winning table enjoying a bottle of French champagne. Thanks to Chef Frederick for the delicious lunch, and Lauren for dealing with the many inquiries and table bookings, and Rudy for efficient service on the day.
New Golfing Portal on our Website
Everyone will by now be aware of the new golfing portal on our website that replaces MiClub. As happens when installing any new software, there are issues to be resolved and we thank you for your patience as these are being addressed. Some of the priority issues being worked on by the developers are:
- Membership categories will be shown and ladies’ bookings will appear in red print.
- On mobile devices (phone, iPad) the username and password will be remembered and the scroll-down function will allow you to access all of your date range selected.
- Refinements of the lesson bookings and cancellations function.
- The “Course” tab (for clinic bookings) will be renamed “Clinics” and moved to a more prominent position.
You are encouraged to familiarise yourself with the new portal and in particular, check your Profile page and update your details if necessary. If you have any constructive feedback on functions you would like to see refined or incorporated into the portal, then please see Joe in the Golf Shop or email email@example.com
With the 2017 season at a close, we move into summer mode of 9-hole competitions on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, and the Summer Competition available for the girls playing on Saturdays. You can, of course, play 2 x 9 holes if you wish to maintain your 18-hole fitness. You are also welcome to play the 9-Hole Summer Series on Friday and Sunday mornings. Check the website for more information.

Pennant Caddy Play Away
30 ladies traveled to Kooralbyn on 13 and 14 November for the annual pennant player and caddies play away. Thanks to 2017 Captain Ann Fell for organising an occasion enjoyed by all who attended.

BDLGA Committee Day at Virginia Golf Club
A number of the 2017 committee ladies played the BDLGA annual inter-committee day at Virginia on Friday, 10 November. Some played the course better than others, none of us played it very well, and needless to say, the BGC team went home empty-handed.
Ladies, Let’s Golf
Our 2017 season is now closed and escorted golf for Bronze members has finished for the year. Vivienne Cassidy will be coordinating this program in 2018, with the enthusiastic assistance of in-coming committee member Trisha Quinn.
The judges had a really tough time this year – the number and quality of entries made it our best-ever Best Photo competition. The winning entry, receiving a round of golf for two with a motorised cart at Noosa Springs, is Jan Hamilton with her magnificent photo of the Lilac Breasted Roller bird taken at the Jacana Camp in Botswana.
Runner-Up was Helen King’s photo of Dettifoss Waterfalls in Iceland.
Special commendations of our judging panel went to the following:
Charity Year High Tea Cook Book
Next year is our charity year when all monies raised from our fundraising efforts, sweeps, mulligans, and raffles etc go towards a nominated charity (to be announced in the New Year). In 2018, as well as holding the ever-popular charity Trivia Night, the Ladies’ Committee will be hosting a High Tea and fashion parade on Friday, 23 March.
A High Tea recipe book is being compiled, and if you would like to contribute your favorite High Tea sweet or savoury “something” recipe, please email to email@example.com. All contributions must be received no later than 1 February 2018. If you know of a business or individual who may be interested in contributing towards the cost of printing the recipe book, please let me know.
You can almost hear it humming and Tessa certainly looks very relaxed and soothed, but did the Tibetan Healing Bowl cure her golfer’s elbow? With the first treatment session coming with a disclaimer that a second session “may be necessary”, the answer is unknown. Regardless, Tessa certainly looks serenely peaceful.
We have seen what a talented seamstress and milliner Jan Battersy is, viz her Melbourne Cup outfits. She is also right out there in the swimwear fashion stakes. Looking absolutely stunning, Jan. Enjoy your cruise!
No Tears this Year
Little Hamish celebrated his 3rd birthday with another fabulous cake created by grandmother Robyn Elphinstone – you will recall last year he had a major meltdown when his “doggie” cake was cut. Thankfully, no tears this year, apparently.
Cleaning up at Yamba
A group of BGC girls had a wonderful few days at Yamba recently participating in the annual Yamba Ladies’ Golf Tournament, and scooping up many prizes including two major raffles, and the two pots of parsley awarded to the most tenacious (but least successful) ladies!
The day before Christmas, Dave who lives in Brisbane, calls his son in Perth and tells him, “Son, I hate to give you bad news at this time, but your mother and I are getting divorced. Forty-five years of misery is forty-five too many.”
The son is absolutely flabbergasted, and simply can’t believe what he’s hearing and despite his protestations, Dave continues, “We’re sick of each other, son, and I’m sick of talking about this. So you call your sister in Darwin and tell her the news.”
Frantically, the son calls his sister. “Like hell they’re getting divorced,” she rages. “Leave it to me and I’ll talk to them.”
The sister immediately calls Dave, and screams down the phone, “You are not getting divorced. You hear me? And you are not doing a single thing until I get there. I’m calling my brother back and we’ll both be there tomorrow. Until then, don’t you do a single thing!” And she hangs up the phone.
Dave hangs up his phone and turns to his wife. “All sorted, luv! They’re coming for Christmas – and they’re paying their own way.”
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
