The Brisbane Golf Club’s defence of their Division 1 title commences this Sunday with an away match against Royal Queensland Golf Club.
RQ won Division 2 last year, and Division 3 the year before, and will be one of the teams to beat in 2018. Their home record last year in Division 2 was outstanding with only 7.5 points out of a possible 63 points won against them.
BGC will start the year strongly with only Gary Brodie, who is travelling overseas at the moment, unavailable for selection. His replacement in the Masters, however, Phillip Melksham, is a quality player and has just regained his amateur status after a stint on the PGA Legends Tour. The Masters will also welcome Scott Bretherton who has played in the Opens in recent years and will make his debut in the over 50 years of age division.
Our Masters team is Scott Bretherton, Rick Davenport, Stephen Deane, Phillip Melksham and Warwick Oxenford.
The matches against RQ in the Juniors will be a feature of the day’s play with both teams having some wonderful talent. Both clubs had 10 representatives in the field during last week’s Queensland Boys Amateur at Bargara Golf Club. It’s pleasing to see all five of our Juniors selected to play for BGC this week played in 2017 and even more pleasing that the only player missing from our Juniors, Dylan Barraclough will play in the Opens.
Our Juniors team is Katio Chiu, Jordan Hampson, Baily Ittensohn, Sam Slater and Ben Stieler
Our Opens team is arguably the strongest in many years with the decision on who will play number one testament to our depth. There are a number of players who could fill that important role including current Club Champion, Steven Cox; the club’s highest ranked Amateur, Lawry Flynn, six-time Club Champion, Cameron Powell, former PGA Professional, Kurt Carlson and current State player, Louis Dobbelaar.
Our Opens team is Dylan Barraclough, Kurt Carlson, Steven Cox, Louis Dobbelaar, Wade Edwards, Eugene Estella, Lawry Flynn, Sam Howse, Tim Lukin, Cameron Powell and Ilaja Soldan.
Once again it would be wonderful to see as many Members as possible supporting our team this Sunday. Tee off is 7am at Royal Queensland Golf Club.
Live score updates will again be provided on Facebook.
